Welcome to our website

About Perfins

A perfin is a number of small holes in a distinct pattern applied to stamps as security against theft.


The name perfin is a condensed form of PERForated INitials, or PERForated INsignia.


Other security endorsements on stamps include commercial overprints (on stamps used fiscally) and underprints.

About the Perfin Society

The Perfin Society was formed in the UK in 1957 and currently has around 300 members all over the world. 

We welcome collectors of perfins or other security endorsements of all countries.

The Society publishes a Bulletin every 2 months, runs regular auctions of worldwide perfins and other security endorsements, holds regular meetings, publishes catalogues and maintains an extensive library.

We aim to record all perfins on GB stamps, their period of use and identity of the user.  We liaise with other Societies with similar interests.

Added three GB High values study papers by William Hall to Research Corner.  

They seek to record all known perfin copies of the "long" £1 stamps of 1884 to 1911, recording the different perfin dies known, scans of individual copies where possible and, for the Queen Victoria issues, a list of the corner letter combinations known.

Reappraisal of H.A. H0080.01  is a 2-page study by Roy Gault looking at the H.A. perfin known used on GB stamps from the 1890s to c. 1918, concluding that there are two subtly different perfins rather than one.

Added an eight page article "Lepard & Smiths Ltd. - Society Perforator" by James Norris who has been restoring a perforator from the 1880s that was originally used by Lepard & Smiths Ltd., then in the 1960s by the Perfin Society before being modified to form the late Chris Carr's personal perfin.

Reappraisal of MM/Co M3960.01 is a 5-page study by Roy Gault looking at the MM/Co perfin on GB stamps and how it has been catalogued over the years, currently as M3960.01, concluding that there are actually two different perfins rather than one.

Added a new Research Corner section to the Articles page.  This section is intended to allow publication of some more in-depth articles exploring the backgrounds of perfin users.


The first article in Research Corner is Gallatly - The Common Factor which is a 9-page article written by Roy Gault which explores the family and business connections behind several firms that used GB perfins that are in some way connected to the Gallatly family.


7th August 2024

Added "A perfinned fiscal forgery", a four page article by Roy Gault that attempts to unravel the mystery of a H.W perfin, known used on GB stamps, appearing on a forged Tasmania stamp, to the articles page.  This article was published in the August 2024 edition of our Bulletin.

Sloper & Co. when they closed down, complete with an index of the perfin and overprint users identified within.  The "brown book" and "Book 1" files have not been published or indexed before.  The other books were available on our old website.
